Patty’s Best Tips for Packing Like a Pro
Over the years, I’ve packed for everything from weekend getaways to month-long international adventures—and let me tell you, I’ve learned a thing or two about what works (and what definitely doesn’t). Whether you’re heading out on a guided tour with me or planning your own escape, these tried-and-true tips will help you pack smart, stay organized, and travel stress-free.
1. Start With a Packing List
Don’t wing it—trust me. A packing list is your best friend. It keeps you on track, helps you avoid overpacking, and ensures you won’t forget essentials like chargers, travel documents, or your favorite pair of walking shoes. Bonus: you can reuse the same list for future trips and adjust as needed.
2. Choose the Right Luggage
For group tours and multi-destination adventures, I always recommend a lightweight, durable suitcase with spinner wheels. Make sure it’s easy to maneuver through airports, hotels, and cobblestone streets. A good carry-on or backpack is also essential for day trips and excursions.
3. Pack in Layers
Weather can be unpredictable—especially when you’re exploring multiple countries or climates. Pack items you can layer: a lightweight jacket, breathable tees, a warm sweater, and a scarf. This makes it easier to adapt to changes without packing your entire closet.
4. Stick to a Color Palette
Choose neutral tones or a simple color scheme so everything coordinates. This way, you can mix and match tops, bottoms, and accessories easily—saving space and cutting down on “just in case” items you probably won’t wear.
5. Use Packing Cubes
Packing cubes are game changers. They keep your suitcase organized, help separate clean from dirty clothes, and make unpacking a breeze. You’ll know exactly where everything is without turning your bag inside out.
6. Always Pack a Travel Essentials Kit
I keep a small bag with travel-sized toiletries, pain relievers, band-aids, motion sickness tablets, lip balm, and my go-to skincare. Add any prescriptions and personal must-haves. Keep it in your carry-on so it’s always within reach.
7. Don’t Forget a Power Strip
With all the phones, tablets, and camera gear we bring along these days, outlets can be scarce—especially in older hotels or cruise cabins. A compact travel power strip ensures you can charge everything without taking turns.
8. Roll—Don’t Fold—Your Clothes
Rolling saves space and reduces wrinkles. It also makes it easier to see everything in your suitcase without having to dig. You’d be surprised how much more you can fit with this method!
9. Pack a Foldable Day Bag
Whether we’re strolling through markets in Bangkok or hiking in Santorini, having a small, lightweight day bag or backpack is key. Use it for water, snacks, sunscreen, and your camera.
10. Leave a Little Room for Treasures
You will shop. You will find something you just have to bring home. Leave a little extra space in your suitcase or bring a collapsible duffel so you’re not stressing about how to fit everything in on your return.
No matter where you’re headed—whether it’s the temples of Cambodia, the canals of Venice, or the pyramids of Egypt—packing doesn’t have to be a headache. Follow these tips and you’ll be ready to roll like a seasoned traveler.
Happy packing, and see you on the next adventure!
